Lori Larusso to Speak

Artist, Lori Larusso, will be speaking tomorrow (10/6) at 1:15pm in the Art Gallery.  If you are unable to attend this talk you will have another chance to hear her speak that same night during the reception, which runs from 6-8pm in the Art Gallery.  These events are free and open to the public.

Larusso’s paintings contain interior spaces and manicured semi-private outdoor spaces that suggest a relative level of comfort and social acceptance. Confidently defined, the architecture represented through image sometimes confirms and sometimes questions the stability of the situation. The commonality of the image is encouraged by the absence of personal information.Including only necessary information to complete the idea and composition, the edge of the painted image defines the edge of the support. Moving outside of the traditional rectangular format, the interaction of the painting with the wall becomes a relevant aspect to the work.

Negative/positive space issues arise and become significant, as well as actual shadows cast onto the wall from the piece versus painted shadows in the piece. The flat image lends itself to intentionality of mark making. Her representations of generic and stereotypical middle America remind us of the culture we maintain on a daily basis through our every action. Our ideals are often a reflection of the way we wish things were, rather than a product of the way we actually experience them. This conflict is in direct connection to the representational image.

Photography Show Reception

Parkland photography instructor, Craig McMonigal, along with Dr. Ian Wang have co-curated a photography show at the Illini Union Gallery with an opening reception this Friday at 5-7pm. They selected work from their personal collections and have come up with an eclectic mix of known and unknown photographers. Subjects range from still-life, nudes, portraits and landscapes.
Hope to see you there!

Lots of Info for the beginning of the semester!!!

There is a lot of information to give out at the beginning of the semester, so here we go...

If you need a locker in the D-building or S-building contact csmith@parkland.edu to register to use one.  You must provide your name, the building you want the locker in, a phone number, and an email account that you can be contacted at.  These lockers are only for students taking art classes!  Lockers are given out on a semester basis so you must contact Cindy at the end of the semester if you are taking an art class the next semester and want to keep the locker, otherwise anything left will be disposed of and the lock changed.

The Art & Design Faculty Show is up and running in the Art Gallery and the reception for that show will be next Thursday, Sept. 1st, from 6 - 8 pm.  Photo/Video instructor Peggy Shaw will be giving an artist talk at 7 p.m. and music will be provided by The Chris Reyman Trio.  The event is free and it's a good way to get to know the faculty.

One of our Parkland art alumni, Bonnie Switzer, is having a show at the Urbana City Building as part of Urbana's "Artist of the Corridor" program. Her paintings will be on display until Sept. 30.  There will be a public reception from 4-5 p.m. on Thurs., September 1. You are invited!!  Also if you are at the Urbana Farmer's Market on Saturdays, the City Building is just across vine street and the building is open on Sat. mornings.

The Parkland Art Gallery proudly announces the Parkland College Traveling Art and Design Exhibition, on display at The Art Coop from May 20 through June 26 and, in modified version, at the Champaign County Nursing Home from July 17 through September 9. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

A reception for participating artists will be held at The Art Coop on Friday, May 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana. A Sunday afternoon reception will also be held at the Champaign County Nursing Home from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on July 17. The receptions are also free to the public.

Comprised of works produced in Parkland Art and Design classes within the last year, this traveling exhibit was originally part of the Parkland College Art and Design Student Juried Exhibition; these works were selected for inclusion due to their exceptional strength and variety. Art Gallery Director Lisa Costello said the traveling exhibit affords the gallery “an opportunity to be able to bring the artwork to locations around the community for people who might not otherwise be able to come to our campus.”

“The Art Coop has had a long tradition of supporting artists by providing quality art supplies in the area, and the exhibition space that they have created in their new store is a wonderful venue in which to highlight our student artwork,” Costello said. “We are also looking forward to having the show travel to the Champaign County Nursing Home.”

This exhibit also allows Parkland to recognize, support, and celebrate its most recent student artistic accomplishments and to illustrate the wide range of media explored while taking courses in Photography, Painting, Drawing, Metals, Sculpture, Three-Dimensional Design, Two-Dimensional Design, Color Theory, and Ceramics.

Laura Reiss of Champaign, a participating student artist, says she is looking forward to being involved in the exhibit because her grandmother is a CCNH resident. “I was thrilled to get an award, and I am really pleased that my grandma will be able to see the work in person,” Reiss said.

Other participating artists include Ray Arseneau (Champaign), Marilyn Blanzy (Champaign), Jill Bullington (Urbana), Christy Camarca (Savoy), Jamal Carter (Champaign), Nathan Cooper (Champaign), Kirbi Eckerty (Monticello), Hannah Eisenmann (Champaign), Shawn Fairchild (Champaign), Christopher Faller (Champaign), Boston Fleener (Farmer City), Divina M.
